Għajn Tuffieħa

The Għajn Tuffieħa Beach Malta is adjacent to another well-known beach on the Island, Golden Bay.  While both beaches tend to be popular draws for locals and tourists, there are a few characteristics that distinguish each beach.  You can enjoy some of the same amenities and activities in either place, but you may find a few things on Għajn Tuffieħa that you may not find on Golden Bay starting with the never ending flight of stairs that take you to and from the beach.

The sand of the beach is reddish in color and may be the reason for the beach’s nickname Apple’s Eye.  The bay of stairs typically tends to attract fewer visitors than Golden Bay because the stairs can be difficult if you are not physically capable of negotiating them.  However, those who do make the trip will find that they will not lack the amenities they need and have lots of activities available to them in the almost secluded area.

You can rent umbrellas from a kiosk and partake in beach food unique to Maltese cuisine including tuna ftira and other grilled specials.  If you are after a little fun and excitement, you can engage in water sports if you have the right equipment.  You can also simply go for a swim if you do not want to jet ski, water ski, parasail or perform in any other of the popular water sports that many enjoy on the beach.

While you are enjoying yourself on the beach, you are required to be mindful of others and respect others who have come to enjoy the red sand.  For instance, you are allowed to play volleyball or other beach games as long as you do not make a nuisance of yourself or disturb others.  Of course, you also need to respect the equipment, the beach and those who work there with reasonable courtesy.  Also, unlike on Golden Beach, you are not allowed to barbecue at Għajn Tuffieħa.

Another thing you may enjoy on Għajn Tuffieħa is its unique history.  On top of the cliffs of the beach, you can see an old defense tower built in the mid-1600s.  The Għajn Tuffieħa Tower was actually used as a watch tower through World War II and is opened for tourists on a daily basis.  The beach also has its own unique history with the Church.  You can still see remnants of the areas past as a fortress then watch area for armies who used the area in order to invade Malta.

Of course, you are probably more interested in the recent history of the beach.  There are events such as the yoga and meditation full moon celebration as well as live music performances.  It may also interest you to know that Għajn Tuffieħa has received a very prestigious honor as a Blue Flag beach for its environmentally friendly policies that keep it a litter free beach.

If you are an appreciator of nature, you will also find that the beach has some of the most beautiful sunsets even more so than the ones you will find nearby at Golden Bay.  Furthermore, Għajn Tuffieħa has retained much of its natural charm without many of the modern touches you will find in many other places.  However, this does not mean that you will have to go without many of the conveniences and comforts you have come to enjoy in your everyday life.

The Għajn Tuffieħa Beach is located just five minutes from Golden Bay, so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.  However, Għajn Tuffieħa is the place to be when you are looking for something less crowded when you are more interested in relaxing on the beach rather than moving about.  Still, it is important to consider the beach’s Blue Flag status and respect its litter free and other policies.  You just may find that the beach is well worth the hike.
